Meet Will Pier…

Since 1970  I have lived and worked in Sonoma County with my wonderful wife Anna, a bilingual teacher and community educator. We have raised our family here, and I am determined to preserve  Sonoma County as a place where everyone’s children,  grandchildren and generations to come can live sustainably.

Over the years I have worked as a union carpenter, a general contractor and  an elementary school teacher. A specialist in creek habitat restoration, research and education, for the past seven years  I have been working with the  Sonoma Ecology Center.

My service to Sonoma County is long and varied. For the past eighteen years I have served as a volunteer for ecological projects Countywide which has given me great opportunities to work side by side with fantastic community members as we tackled a variety of important environmental, social and fiscal issues. These endeavors include the City of Sonoma Community Services and Environment Commission, (spending two terms as chair) and the AB939 Local Task Force for the County Waste Management Agency.

I have worked as a watershed advocate in Sacramento since 2003 and I serve on the state Board of the Salmonid Restoration Federation. I am also a member of the County Level Sonoma Valley Citizens’ Advisory Commission. My involvement with the Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy broadened my understanding of the complexities of running municipal and county government. I am proud to have graduated from the Institute and remain in touch with colleagues I met there.

My commitment to the environment began early in my life.  As a child I explored northern California with my father, a lifetime Sierra Club member. He taught me map reading and birding, things I enjoy to this day. My deep ties to the agricultural community began in my boyhood. My mother served on her local Water Conservation Board and promoted local farmer’s markets. I know the importance of being active in my community.  My summers were spent on my grandparents’ dairy farm where I learned the skills and challenges of running a small family farm. I am committed to a sustainable future for Sonoma County.

If you have ideas or concerns, I want to know what you think.
